The regional breakdown of the latest unemployment
figures has revealed some encouraging news for job seekers on the Gold Coast
according to Federal member for McPherson, Hon Karen Andrews.
Figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics
show the unemployment rate in the Gold Coast region is well below the national
average.
“The overall unemployment rates on the Gold Coast
stands at just 3.1%(December 2016), which is 2.6% less than the national trend
figure of 5.7%,” Mrs Andrews said.
“It is also very encouraging to see that the number
of young people out of work has fallen sharply.
“The Youth Unemployment rate (15 to 24 year olds)
fell from 10.1% in November to 7.7% on the Gold Coast, which is also well below
the national average for that age group,’ Mrs Andrew said.
“This is a great sign of employers’ confidence in
our city, and in the economic direction of the Turnbull Government.
“We are also seeing the benefits of strong LNP
representation at both levels of government on the Gold Coast,’ Mrs Andrews
said.
“Late last year, I was proud to be involved in a
local GC101 campaign that led to 101 young people being placed into an
apprenticeship and on the road to a rewarding job and career.
“It’s local initiatives like these that are helping
drive down our unemployment rate.
“The Turnbull Government’s policy to provide small
business tax cuts will generate further investment and job creation on the Gold
Coast and it’s time Labor supported our measures that will get more people in
jobs around the country,” Mrs Andrews said.
