The Morrison Government will strengthen Australia’s recycling sector and help local manufacturers deliver a healthier environment, while growing jobs in the nation’s recycling industry.
A re-elected Morrison Government will reduce plastic wastage and boost plastics recycling with $20 million in funding to be allocated through round 8 of the Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) Projects grants program, as part of the cleaner environment package announced today.
The funding will be used for industry-led research and development projects to deliver innovative solutions to challenges in plastic recycling and reduction of waste.
Minister for Industry, Science and Technology Karen Andrews said prioritising recycling in this round would strengthen Australia’s recycling industry and support it to overcome barriers to higher recycling rates in Australia.
“We’ve always been taught ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ and this funding round will help reduce the economic cost and impact of plastics on our environment and oceans.
“The Coalition is prioritising and supporting Australian businesses and researchers to innovate, develop new markets and design products for recycled plastics.
“We want to see improved plastic collection and sorting systems in recycling plants and better quality of products made using these recycled plastics in areas like manufacturing and construction.”
Around $950 million in funding has been committed to CRCs since the Liberal National Government came into office in 2013, and this commitment further builds on our plan to strengthen Australian industry, economic growth and help to create 1.25 million jobs in the next five years.
