The southern Gold Coast continues to benefit from the Turnbull Government’s job creating policies with a big fall in the area’s unemployment rate over the last year.
Member for McPherson, Karen Andrews, said the jobless rate in the electorate fell by 0.7 per cent in the 12 months to December 2017 to become the lowest rate of unemployment on the Gold Coast.
“Under the Coalition, over 400,000 jobs were created last year and I’m very pleased to see the southern Gold Coast benefitting from that,” Mrs Andrews said.
“The local unemployment rate now stands at just 4.5 per cent, which is well below the Queensland average of 6.1 per cent and an indication of the strength and resilience of our local economy.
“It is great to see that the southern Gold Coast has the lowest rate of unemployment of any area on the Gold Coast.
“As the Prime Minister says, jobs and growth is not a slogan, it’s a direct outcome of a Federal Government committed to providing job opportunities across the country,” Mrs Andrews said.
“We are supporting small businesses on the southern Gold Coast to grow and invest and the result is more jobs.
“I was proud to support the recent GC101 campaign that specifically targeted apprenticeship opportunities for local young people and put them on the road to a good job and career.
With the Commonwealth Games soon approaching and new projects such as Gold Coast Airport’s Project LIFT continuing to foster growth in the local tourism sector, Mrs Andrews is sure that the southern Gold Coast will continue to go from strength to strength.
“Those on the southern Gold Coast have been working hard in the lead up to the Games and it’s great to see this reflected in these figures.
“I look forward to continuing to support the growth of the southern Gold Coast workforce and working with local businesses to deliver them the best opportunities for ongoing success.”
