A new podcast launched today will provide the Australian community a rare insight into work to prevent and deter child sexual abuse and exploitation, and bring to justice those who commit these horrendous crimes.
‘Closing The Net’, produced by the Australian Federal Police-led Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation (ACCCE), will educate the Australian community on this important and sensitive issue.
Minister for Home Affairs Karen Andrews said the podcast series gave a voice to some incredible people who have been personally touched by the issue, as well as those who dedicate their lives to fighting the crime.
“The Morrison Government is committed to safeguarding our children from sexual exploitation,” Minister Andrews said.
“The recent Federal Budget allocated $59.9 million for the AFP over four years to allow it to further invest in new frontline operational activities to keep our children safe.
“Our focus is paying off. This financial year the AFP has arrested and charged more than 200 people with about 2,000 child abuse related offences.
“This podcast is another important initiative, starting a national conversation on this difficult topic. Research suggests about half of Australian parents talk to their children about online safety – while this is a good start, the podcast will empower all families to have these conversations, and better protect children.”
‘Closing The Net’ is available now on all major podcast platforms. The series features 10 uniquely themed episodes addressing the scale of the issue, myth busting, prevention, education, reporting and the importance of partnerships.
