The official “sod turning” and commencement of major works to upgrade the Mudgeeraba to Varsity section of the M1 has been welcomed by Federal Member for McPherson Karen Andrews.
“This vital upgrade is something I have worked with our community to achieve. I am delighted that we will finally see the commencement of works to improve this section of the M1, which locals call the Robina carpark,” Mrs Andrews said.
“Federal funding has made this a reality. And I’m even more thrilled that, with the announcement of a further $1 billion last week, we now have the Federal funds to continue the works and upgrade the M1 all the way to Tugun.”
Mrs Andrews said she had lobbied long and hard in Canberra to secure the Federal funds and thanked local residents who had joined her community campaign to fix the M1.
“The M1 is the biggest single issue that has been raised with me over the last 7 years. Improving traffic flow, especially here on the southern Gold Coast, has been my priority. Today’s sod turning, and last week’s funding announcement are the light at the end of the tunnel. It’s been a long, hard fight.”
“I am very pleased that we will ultimately get a much-improved M1 so that locals can spend more time with their families and less time stuck in traffic. Of course, in the interim there will be some delays and lane closures, so I thank everyone in advance for their patience.”
“Today’s ceremony is a positive step forward – but I’ll keep up the pressure to make sure that the upgrade continues quickly and seamlessly all the way through to Tugun.”
