Southern Gold Coast residents are being asked to join a new push to secure funding to widen the M1 to Tugun by signing an online petition.
Federal Member for McPherson, Karen Andrews, said the petition was part of her ongoing plan to put pressure on both Canberra and the State Government to ensure that funding is forthcoming to widen the final section of the M1 from Varsity Lakes to Tugun.
“I am pleased to deliver on the promised widening from Mudgeeraba to Varsity Lakes, with agreement reached earlier this year with the Queensland Government and work about to commence. As part of that agreement, funding was also provided to begin planning of the upgrade further south,” Mrs Andrews said.
“I want to ensure the further work is not stuck in the planning stage – we have to move this forward as soon as possible. The original deal back in 2007 was for widening all the way through to Tugun and anyone who drives south regularly knows how important this is.”
Mrs Andrews said the backing of local residents would help make the case for urgent funding even stronger.
“I will be putting pressure on my Federal Government colleagues and the Queensland Government to back the project and encourage local residents to sign the online petition.
“The more names we get behind the upgrade, the stronger the case will be,” Mrs Andrews said.
“I spoke out on this issue just last week in Parliament and I’m going to continue speaking out at every opportunity.
“It will take just a minute to add your voice to the campaign. Just go to www.karenandrewsmp.com.au and follow the prompts.”
