Safer Streets is a Coalition Government initiative that will deliver local projects to prevent, deter and detect crime in areas identified as having a crime or anti-social behaviour problem. The Programme is divided into two streams for projects directed at either:
Stream 1 – Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design Initiatives, and
Stream 2 – Developmental Crime Prevention initiatives by Police and Citizen Youth Clubs (PCYC) and Bluelight organisations.
Under Round 2 of the programme, the Government will invest up to $29.4 million in individual grants to help reduce fear of crime and contribute to greater community safety and resilience across communities including the Southern Gold Coast.
This investment will build on the more than $19 million in funding the Government has already awarded under Round 1 for projects across 150 locations to deliver security enhancements such as better lighting and CCTV in retail, entertainment and commercial precincts.
The Safer Streets Programme uses proceeds of crime – confiscated from criminals – to fund these local crime prevention projects.
