Two Gold Coast schools will be taking a big step in skilling their students for the future
thanks to funding as part of a nation-wide digital literacy program run by the
Turnbull Government.
Federal Member for McPherson, the Hon Karen Andrews MP, announced All Saints Anglican School will receive $48,000 and Somerset College will receive $50,000 through
the Digital Literacy School Grants Program to implement a peer coaching program.
“The All Saints Anglican School’s project will establish a Technology Design Centre
where teachers will work with an expert, specialist teacher to engage students
in the Australian Curriculum: Digital Technologies,” Mrs Andrews said.
Somerset College’s project will help implement the Australian Curriculum: Digital Technologies
over two years and develop a successful coding and robotics program from Prep
to Year 10 within its framework as an International Baccalaureate school where
students have access to a range of physical computing equipment and systems.
“Congratulations to All Saints Anglican School and Somerset College for being selected from
almost 1800 applications.”
“These programs are about making sure our students get the support and skills they
need for the future,” Mrs Andrews said.
“Building the science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) capability of our
students is essential as 75 percent of future jobs will require these skills.
“As a nation we need to build digital literacy of students at school to ensure they
are equipped for the jobs of the future.”
$4 million had been allocated to the program as part of the Turnbull Government’s $50.6
million commitment to help Australian teachers and students embrace the digital age.
“The next round of funding under the Digital Literacy Schools Grant Program opens in
the middle of this year and I encourage all Gold Coast schools to apply.
“We’re committed to ensuring that each student, no matter where they live in
Australia, has a strong knowledge of STEM,” Mrs Andrews said.
