Strengthening trainer and assessor skills

Australia’s vocational education and training (VET) sector is set to benefit from strengthened training requirements for trainers and assessors.

Assistant Minister for Vocational Education and Skills, Karen Andrews, today announced new requirements to boost the credentials of those providing training and assessments in the VET sector.

“We all have a stake in building the capacity of our skills training to keep the sector strong,” Minister Andrews said.
“Our trainers and assessors are at the coalface of our efforts to continuously improve the quality of Australia’s VET system,” the Minister said.

The changes will ensure trainers and assessors have the skills and knowledge to design and develop assessment tools and address adult language, literacy and numeracy skills.

Trainers and assessors who currently hold the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment or the Assessor Skill Set will need to obtain the new core units of competency on top of their existing credentials by 1 April, 2019.

The update to the credential requirements follows a recommendation from the Australian Industry and Skills Committee and will apply to all trainers and assessors delivering nationally recognised training.

“Assessors and trainers are critical to ensuring graduates are not only leaving with the technical skills they need but the everyday skills all employees need to succeed - language, literacy and numeracy skills.

“Fine-tuning and finessing the training we provide will help to make sure these fundamental skills are a key component of all training.

The trainer and assessor credential requirements have been updated in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) 2015.
