Gold Coast jobless rate among lowest in country

Federal Member for McPherson, the Hon. Karen Andrews, says the latest regional
breakdown of unemployment figures has delivered more good news for Gold Coast
job seekers.

“The overall unemployment rate for the Gold Coast in January fell to 4.0 per cent
compared to 6.3 per cent for the same month last year, giving the region one of
the lowest jobless figures in Queensland,” Mrs Andrews said.

The national unemployment rate in January stands at 6.1 per cent and in Queensland
it’s 6.7 per cent.

“The news is especially encouraging for those in the 15 to 24 age group with the
youth unemployment rate more than halving in the same period from 15 per cent
in January 2016 to just 6.9 per cent last month,” Mrs Andrews said.

“It’s also well below the current national youth jobless figure of 13.5 per cent.

“The result reflects a confident local economy under the responsible economic
management of the Turnbull Government and strong LNP representation at state
and federal levels,” Mrs Andrews said.

“With more school leavers now transitioning into the job market, the challenge will
be to maintain the positive momentum in youth employment.

“As Assistant Minister for Vocational Education and Skills, I encourage those not
undertaking study to consider an apprenticeship or vocational education course to
provide them with the skills that will put them on the path to a job and
career,” Mrs Andrews said.

“Latest figures show those who complete training have a very high chance of moving
straight into full-time employment and there are a number of industry sectors
here on the Gold Coast facing a skills shortage.”

The GC101 apprenticeship drive on the Gold Coast last year placed 102 young people
into an apprenticeship in less than two months and there are still many more
opportunities available.
