Gold Coast Pop-up Science Centre for National Science Week

Griffith University Gold Coast will bring the fun of
National Science Week to the Gold Coast after receiving $20,000 from the
Australian Government to deliver the Pop-Up Science Centre.

Assistant Minister for Vocational Education and Skills and
Federal Member for McPherson, the Hon. Karen Andrews, congratulated Griffith
University for its efforts to inspire people about science, technology and
innovation during 2017’s national celebration of science running from 12-20
August.

“I have long been a keen advocate for Science, Technology,
Engineering and Maths (STEM) studies, especially for young girls, and it is great
that Griffith University is providing an interactive event to inspire locals
about all things science,” Mrs Andrews said.

“The Pop-Up Science Centre will be a free event held as a
final celebration for National Science Week. It will give locals the opportunity
to experiment and explore the world of science with hands-on and interactive
exhibits.

“People are fascinated by the science in our everyday lives,
and the Pop-Up Science Centre will prove that anyone can participate in science
activities, regardless of their background, age or location,” Mrs Andrews said.

The Pop-Up Science Centre is among 39 projects chosen
nationally to receive funding in a $500,000 grant round announced last week by
Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science Senator the Hon Arthur Sinodinos
AO.

“These initiatives will give people in metropolitan,
regional and remote areas opportunities to meet scientists, do science, discuss
hot topics and celebrate the contribution of Australian science to society,
culture and economy,” Minister Sinodinos said.

First held in 1997, National Science Week has become one of
Australia’s largest festivals. Last year a staggering 1.3 million people
participated in over 1800 events and activities.
